The 2022 Honda Navi vs. Electric Bicycle For City Travel
« on: November 23, 2021, 05:08:24 PM »
Is the new Honda Navi a better choice for city transportation than an electric bicycle? I think so. Don't get wrong, I like bicycles of all types and they do offer some advantages over gas powered vehicles, but when your talking strictly about moving yourself from point A to point B I think the Navi wins. Here's a list of 10 advantages the Honda Navi has over electric bicycles:

  • The Honda Navi is only $1800. The better electric bicycles are over $3k
  • The Honda Navi is fully automatic so there is no shifting or manual clutch to operate. You can find electric bicycles that have automatic shifting but expect to pay close to $5k or more.
  • The Honda Navi has a more reliable drive train. Many electric bicycle use mid drive motors that send electric power through a traditional bicycle chain and sprocket system which increases maintenance and causes more drive train failure. The Honda Navi is a purpose built motorcycle with a traditional scooter CVT drive train that offers proven reliability.
  • The Honda Navi is easy and fast to refuel. The Honda Navi gets 110 mpg and has a .9 gallon capacity fuel tank. That's a range of 99 miles per tank of gas, and we all know how fast a vehicle can be refueled at a gas station. You can even improve convenience by keeping a 5 gallon gas tank at home for refueling. Most electric bicycles have a range less than 50 miles and recharging the battery takes hours.
  • The Honda Navi has a top speed of 50 mph or 80 kph. Legal electric bicycles have a top speed of 20 mph or 28 mph.
  • Dealer support. There are thousands of Honda dealers across America to provide any type of support for the Honda Navi. Not true with many electric bicycles.
  • The Honda Navi comes with a built-in storage area to haul smaller items. I expect Honda will offer a rack and rear trunk option for the Navi for even more storage area.
  • The Honda Navi is reliable. The Navi hasn't been released yet in the USA, but it's a Honda. Everyone knows Honda's are known for being reliable. The Honda Navi was released in India for a few years, so I would imagine any major flaws would already have been taken care of.
  • The Honda Navi offers no-sweat transportation. Many electric bicycle's require the rider to pedal before the electric motor will assist in pedaling, so if it's a hot day your going to be sweaty when you arrive at your destination.
  • The Honda Navi doesn't have an expensive lithium battery to replace, and it offers consistent performance in all seasons. The Honda Navi is gas powered so it doesn't rely on an expensive lithium battery for energy like electric bicycles. Lithium batteries provide about 500 recharges, then they lose a significant amount of capacity, which means range is greatly reduced. Battery replacement costs are usually between $400 and $1000. The better the battery the higher the cost. Also, a lithium battery performance degrades in colder temperatures. Your electric bicycle won't perform as well in cold winter months as it does during warmer weather.
