The Place Beyond the Pines is a crime, drama, thriller movie starring Ryan Gosling. The movie was released on April 19, 2013. Ryan Gosling's character, Luke, is a motorcycle stunt rider for a carnival attraction called the Globe of Death. Luke turns to a life of crime to better provide for his family using the only skill he has, riding motorcycles. Throughout the whole movie he rides several different versions of a 2009 Suzuki DR-Z400S and a 2009 Honda CRF230L dual sport motorcycles. Production altered the bikes by removing or changing the plastics, changing paint/color, changing the gas tank and seat, etc so the changes were only superficial and the make and model of the motorcycles were fairly easy to identify.
Every Hollywood movie is guilty of using the wrong sound clips and that includes motorcycle sounds. They do this to make the motorcycle sound fast, but this movie seemed especially guilty of it. I counted several different motorcycle sounds used for the same motorcycle in one scene depending on whether the motorcycle is idling, accelerating or cruising. Its not a big deal and doesn't take anything away from the movie, but its something motorcycle people will notice.
The Place Beyond the Pines was an OK movie. The motorcycles are cool and I like the riding scenes, but the main character is depressed and it ends badly for him, which makes the film gloomy. I prefer movies that are more upbeat and with a brighter ending.
The best line in the movie is "If you ride like lightning, you're gonna crash like thunder." There's a funny take on that line in the last video in this post, so go have a look.

This is a 2009 Honda CRF230L that was auctioned after the movie release.
Another version of a 2009 Honda CRF230L used in the movie. Notice how the shape of the rear fender doesn't match the shape of the frame.
A blacked out version of the same 2009 Suzuki DR-Z400S used in the movie.
