All 1994-2011 Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycles use HYD-13 key blanks. In 2012 Harley Davidson switched to a key blank with a longer key blade in 4 different styles or keyways that are used in all Sportster models from 2012 to the present. The correct keyway for your 2012 to present (2017 as of this writing) Harley Davidson Sportster can be determined from your key code series. A key code is a code used to determine the correct cuts for your key to operate your Sportster locks and is sometimes stamped on the original key, or is written on a removable tab included with your original key. Your key code series will start with a letter A, B, C or D. See photo. A code series that starts with the letter A uses a HYD-16 key blank, a codes series that starts with the letter B uses a HYD-15 key blank, a codes series that starts with the letter C uses a HYD-18 key blank, and a codes series that starts with the letter D uses a HYD-17 key blank.
If you don’t have your key code, than use the photo on this page to determine which key you have. Key blanks HYD-15 and HYD-16 use a keyway that is the mirror image of one another. Key blanks HYD-17 and HYD-18 also use a keyway that is the mirror image of one another. So, take your working Sportster key and match the grooves in your key blade to the correct key blank using the photo.
The older style HYD-13 Sportster key blank has a key blade length of .744 inches measured from the key shoulder to the tip. The newer and longer Sportster keys have a key blade length of .920 inches measured from the key shoulder to the tip.
